Bouncing out of bed this morning it was hard to convince myself we live in the “Winterless North”. Even Benny, our bolshie cat with his wonderfully long, thick fur coat, seemed reluctant to move from the woolly magnetic pet bed he’d chosen for his night’s sleep, moving only when the sound of food hitting his bowl tempted him. Outside, our three adopted hens (Henny, Penny and Jenny – a good match for Benny who’s still coming to terms with their presence on his turf) plumped their feathers and trod delicately on the cold ground in search of a sheltered sunny spot.
It’s probably not really that cold when compared to the Winters of my childhood in wild but beautiful coastal Taranaki. I remember well waking up in the early morning dark to help Dad with his milkrun, bundled up against the freezing westerlies as we sheltered on the back of his truck as he drove the frosty streets where the ice would often linger til mid morning.
Frozen fingers, frozen toes, frozen noses, frozen milk – courtesy of the mountain that loomed magnificently over our lives.
Now we live in a more benign climate on the east coast of Northland – but on days like this when the wind bites and the rain drives through those chilly Taranaki mornings don’t seem so far away.
Nights, though, are something to look forward to as we retreat to the wonderfully comforting warmth of our Lambswool Magne-Sleep bed. I never cease to be amazed at how well I sleep through all kinds of weathers thanks to Magne-Sleep’s ability to keep me warm and to relax away all the stresses of battling through the day. It’s hard to leave that delightful haven – but the hens’ cackling and Benny’s demands to be served usually put a quick end to any thoughts of a long lie-in.
It’s more than 20 years now since we made our first Lambswool Magne-Sleep. We’ve made a few refinements and innovations along the way but basically it’s the same outstanding balance of gentle but highly effective magnetic therapy and the best quality lambswool we can source. We’ve always kept our focus on the best combination of these elements so we can offer our customers what we believe is the best quality, best value magnetic underlay you can choose.
Of course, we also offer our Quilted Pure Cotton Magne-Sleep at a lower price point made to the same very high standard as our Lambswool Magne-Sleep. If you’d like to know more about our two Magne-Sleep options, email us or give us a call anytime on 09 431 5236.
Giving The Hens A Home
We’ve recently adopted three homeless hens, abandoned by their owner and quickly making themselves very much at home with us. They’ve been free-ranging and sleeping in a tree in our nature strip and we’ve decided they need better protection from the elements and predators.
So construction is underway, and no architects need feel threatened by our efforts. Pallets and bits of plywood, lino floor and a practical lift-off lid to give us easy access to the anticipated eggs we’ll be blessed with each morning – it’s an exercise in rustic rural construction. Lots of hammering, sawing and cursing fill the air, and the design varies as moods change and materials are found lacking. All good fun and hopefully it’ll be finished before Winter is gone.
The hens have quickly become part of Benny’s life, fascinating and terrifying him until he can’t resist the urge to leap at them and send them scattering. Asserting his ownership of the property proves fairly exhausting and he spends a fair bit of time dozing as they peck their way past him. I think they have a grudging respect and liking for each other – long may it last.
Having creatures like this adds another dimension to our days in our delightful rural setting. When we tire of Benny’s antics – or he heads off for yet another nap – we watch the hens pecking away while in the adjacent paddock the sheep are nearing lambing time and it won’t be long before the little ones are frolicking around.
Life is good and we’re incredibly lucky to live in such a great area in such a great country. Covid continues to be an ongoing threat but we are very fortunate to still enjoy our every days (and our nights, thanks to Magne-Sleep).
